Los verbos modales:
- Son invariables, por lo que no se conjugan y tienen una misma forma para todas las personas.
- Son verbos auxiliares que no pueden funcionar como un verbo principal. Van siempre acompañados de otro verbo en forma base (infinitivo sin “to”).
- No necesitan do/does para formar la negativa o interrogativa
- Pueden expresar habilidad, posibilidad, necesidad …..
- Be able to, need to, y have to no comparten todas estas características, pero sí algunos de sus usos.

CAN
1. Indica habilidad, capacidad, posibilidad o sugerencia. En estos casos puede ser traducido como “poder” o “saber” en español.
I can speak five languages You can phone me tonight if you need me Bill can’t help you.
The restaurant can be expensive if you drink wine It can be dangerous to drive if you are tired
2. En negativa indica imposibilidad (certeza de que algo no puede ser), o prohibición
It can’t be Mary the person knocking at the door. She is in France right now
You can’t go out until you finish tidying your room
3. En interrogativas, puede solicitar permiso, hacer peticiones o preguntar posibilidades.
Can I have a glass of water? Can you help me? Can they work late tonight?

BE ABLE TO
1. Se usa para cubrir los tiempos verbales que no tiene can. A veces tiene el sentido de conseguir hacer algo.
She has been able to pass the exam. In ten years time, cars will be able to fly.

COULD
1. Indica posibilidad o habilidad en el pasado (podía / sabía)
Joe could speak Spanish when he was young. I couldn’t sleep last night
Could you play an instrument when you were a child ? It could have been worse.
2. También se usa para posibilidades en el futuro, posibilidad remota y sugerencias indirectas (podría)
You could pass the test if you studied. I think it could rain later. She could phone him
3. Como can, en frases interrogativas could puede solicitar permiso o preguntar sobre las posibilidades, pero es más formal.
Could you pass the salt please? Could you help me? Could I be wrong?
4. CAN / COULD + HAVE + PARTICIPIO indica algo que se pudo haber en el pasado pero que finalmente no se hizo. Incluso aunque can es presente, también indica algo del pasado que no hicimos. Así mismo, también puede expresar suposición.
He could have won if he had tried. She can’t have arrived yet.
COULDN’T HAVE + PARTICIPIO expresa la certeza de que algo no pudo haber ocurrido.

MAY / MIGHT
1. Indicar posibilidades en el futuro, igual que could (podría / puede que), la posibilidad es remota si se usa might
I would bring an umbrella, it may/might rain later.
It may/might be better to finish this now, rather than wait until tomorrow.
2. También se puede utilizar para dar o denegar permiso o instrucciones.
You may leave if you like. You may use your mobile phones now.
3. En interrogativas, el uso de may es más educado que can o could. En este uso, might es más común en UK que en USA.
May I have a glass of water? May I leave now? Might I leave you my CV?
4. MAY / MIGHT + HAVE + PARTICIPIO indica que no estamos seguros (suposición) sobre algo que ocurrió en el pasado. En este sentido es parecido a could.
She might have arrived yesterday evening, but I don’t know it.

SHOULD / OUGHT TO / HAD BETTER
1. Indica recomendación, opinión sobre lo que es correcto hacer o no hacer (debería), dar consejo.
I should call my parents more often. You shouldn’t work so hard.
They should practice more if they want to win the championship.
2. En interrogativas se usa para preguntar si existe una obligación o para pedir una recomendación.
Should we leave a tip? Should I have the steak or the chicken? Where should they meet you?
3. Ought to y had better son sinónimos de should, aunque had better es más colloquial y lo traduciríamos por “es mejor que, más te vale que”. Su diferencia con should es que implican cierta advertencia. Apenas se usa ought to en interrogativas y negativas.
She ought to stop smoking You had better go now or you’ll be late They ought to work less.
4. SHOULD / OUGHT TO HAVE + PARTICIPIO sirven para quejarnos de lo que ocurrió como lamentarnos de que no se haya cumplido lo que esperábamos. SHOULDN’T HAVE + PARTICIPIO expresa nuestra opinión crítica sobre un hecho pasado, indicando que no debería haber ocurrido.
You should have booked a guided tour around Rome. You shouldn’t have told them my secret.

NEED / NEED TO
1. NEED Indica una obligación que no es fuerte. Es un semi modal, no es de uso común y se usa en contextos formales. Se puede conjugar
No one need know the name of the guilty man Need we write it down?
2. NEED TO se puede conjugar y puede usarse en todos los tiempos verbales. Expresa obligación o necesidad
She needs to have more experience for this position
HAVE TO
1. Indica obligación fuerte aunque algo menos que must en este uso. Se usa en todos los tiempos verbales, cubriendo los que must no tiene.
She has to give in her Project tomorrow. They will have to study hard to pass the course.
DON’T HAVE TO / NEEDN’T
1. Indican ausencia de obligación. Es decir, que no es necesario hacer algo.
You needn’t bring anything to the party. You don’t have to come if you don’t want to.
2. NEEDN’T + HAVE + PART indica algo que no era necesario haber hecho
You needn’t have worried so much. Everything was perfect.

MUST / MUSTN’T
1. MUST indica una obligación fuerte o necesidad, especialmente cuando la impone la ley o alguien de autoridad.
You must read this book, it’s fantastic. You must brush your teeth twice a day.
We must leave now or we will be late. When must we meet you?
2. También se puede usar para indicar probabilidad o conclusión lógica.
John’s not here. He must be sick because he never misses class
It must be difficult to learn a new language as an adult
3. Es posible también usar must para preguntas retóricas.
Must you always be late? Must she talk so much?
4. MUSTN’T en negativo indica prohibición
You must not drink and drive. You mustn’t bring your mobile phones to class
5. MUST + HAVE + PARTICIPIO se usa cuando estamos bastante seguros de algo que ocurrió en el pasado o cuando hacemos conclusiones lógicas del pasado.
They must have worked together in that company.

WOULD
1. Se usa para indicar una preferencia o preguntar por algo educadamente
I would like a beer and my wife would like a glass of wine please.
She would like to go to New York someday. Would you like some coffee?
When would you like to go to the movies? Would you help me please?
2. WOULD HAVE + PARTICIPIO indica que se quiso haber hecho algo en el pasado pero no pudo debido a circunstancias externas.
She would have found her way but the signs weren’t clear.

WILL
1. Además de para formar el futuro, “will” también significa voluntad o determinación.
I will help you. We will learn English even if we have to study it for years
2. Se utiliza en frases interrogativas para pedir información, un favor o sobre opciones.
Will they find a cure for cancer? Will you help me move? Will he go to Paris by car or train?

SHALL
1. Se usa como “will” para formar el futuro. Su uso es más común en el Reino Unido y en general es más educado.
Chris shall be happy to see you. I’ll* take the 3 o’clock train.
* Las formas cortas de “will” y “shall” son lo mismo.
2. También se puede utilizar para ofertas y sugerencias o para preguntar sobre opciones o preferencias.
Shall l we meet at 10pm? Shall we go to the movies or a museum?

Algunas de las prácticas que puedes llevar a cabo para mejorar tu listening son:

Ver series y películas en V.O: Si te resulta muy complicado al principio puedes poner los subtítulos en español y poco a poco ir cambiando los subtítulos a inglés para después prescindir de los mismos.
Escuchar la radio: Hay emisoras como radio Vaughan que te ayudarán con tu comprensión del inglés y puedes escucharla Online. Dedicar una hora al día te será de gran utilidad.
Ver vídeos y tutoriales en internet. Youtube está lleno de vídeos enfocados al aprendizaje del inglés para españoles. (Vaughan)
Audio-lecturas: Escuchar mientras lees, bien sea artículos como pequeñas historias. Esta opción es muy útil porque de esta manera a la vez que lees y comprendes el inglés memorizas la pronunciación.
Y por su puesto ¡conversa!: No hay mejor manera de aprender inglés y practicar el listening que hablando con nativos. Puedes acudir a cualquier café especializado en este tipo de intercambios, conocer a un amigo inglés o apuntarte a una academia.
